Sønderho

Sønderho at the southern end of Fanø is one of the most beautiful villages in Denmark.

Paying a visit to Sønderho is an absolute must when you travel to Fanø. Park your car at the parking place opposite the church and spend some hours walking through the village’s small narrow alleys.

Pay a visist to the Fanø Museum of Arts, Nanas Stue with its collection of flagstones, Hannes Hus, Sønderho Windmill and the church of Sønderho.

The small village with only 328 inhabitants dates back to the 16th century. The many old, well-preserved buildings stem mainly from the 19th century when Sønderho was the leading navigation place at the jutlandic west coast. In the second half of the 18th century Sønderho’s importance was slowly decreasing and the last new building was built in 1877.

The harbour and the dockyard area lay in a protected bay at the north-east end of Sønderho. However, the port entrance was sand back-filled and today it is a “narrow area”.

The close connection to the navigation is strongly represented by the Sønderho Church which is the church with the most model ships in Denmark – altogether 15.

But Sønderho is much more than just history. There are shops, artisans, art galleries, cafés and restaurants and of course Sønderho Kro, one of the oldest guesthouses in Denmark, from 1722.

To the south and west of Sønderho there is the summer residence area and many of these summer residences are built in traditional style.

Sønderho’s nature has a lot to offer as well. A broad sandy beach, dunes, the wadden sea, and sealbanks at the southern end of the island. There lie hundreds of seals who curiously look at the tourists who are passing by.

At the bus station you find an information room with information on Sønderho and activities.
